Do You Really Need Sports Guard?

Remember when we used to associate a toothless smile with a hockey player? We no longer have to worry about a puck to the face (well, from a dental standpoint, at least) due to a little but mighty device called a sports guard.

It’s surprising that something so small can prevent such devastating dental injuries, but it can. Using a properly fitted sports guard can greatly reduce the risk of tooth loss, tooth movement and even gum and bone trauma due to sports-related injuries. Any sport that has the potential for contact (with another person or with an object) is deemed essential, if not necessary, to wear a sports guard.

What is a sports guard?

A sports guard is a clear cushy retainer made from a type of plastic that gets inserted over the top of the upper teeth to prevent injury. When properly fitted, it should click in without being uncomfortable while still fitting snugly enough that it can’t pop out easily. Sports guards are thicker than any other guard or retainer you might have, including a night guard and aligner trays.

How does a sports guard work?

It works by dispersing the forces of an impact throughout the jaw instead of 1 or 2 teeth taking the brunt. It also acts as a cushion between teeth to prevent tooth-on-tooth injury.

How is a sports guard made?

The process to have your sports guard made is simple. You will have impressions taken of your teeth, which will be sent to a lab, and about a week later, you will have your sports guard fitted in and adjusted. Instructions for use and care will be provided. Sometimes within a sports league, sports guards can be made for an entire team at once to make the process easier and quicker.

Caring for your sports guard

Be sure to wear your guard every time you are at risk of contact injury, even during practice. You can brush your guard with a separate toothbrush and running water and store it in a dry container. If you notice any chips or cracks in your guard, it’s time for a new one.
