Why consider getting dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial metal root surgically inserted into the jawbone and attached to an artificial tooth, which looks and functions just like a natural tooth. Implants are a great alternative to bridges and dentures, which may not fit properly.

In some situations, it may become challenging to build dentures or bridges if there aren’t stable enough roots to work with. One of the main reasons dental implants are an attractive option for tooth replacement is that they are comfortable and look like natural teeth. While dental implant surgery is more costly than other tooth replacement procedures, it is a one-time cost, as you likely will never need to replace a dental implant.

Are You A Good Dental Implant Candidate?

If your gums are healthy, your jaw has enough bone to hold an implant, and you are generally in good health, you should discuss getting dental implants with your dentist. If you need to have dental crowns, bridgework or dentures placed on your implants at a later time, you may also be referred to a prosthodontics specialist.

What Is The Dental Implant Process Like?

You will have to book a few appointments before the entire process is complete.

Step 1 - Comprehensive dental exam and medical consultation:

You’ll need to undergo a thorough exam to ensure dental surgery is appropriate for you. This comprehensive exam may include dental x-rays and 3D imaging of your teeth and jaw. Your dentist will need to know your medical history and any medications you are taking. Your dentist will also need to establish a treatment plan that will consider your specific circumstances, such as the number of teeth that need to be replaced, the state of your remaining natural teeth and your jawbone.

Step 2 – Placement of implants under the gum:

The dentist performing the surgery will start by placing a screw-like titanium metal implant into the bone under the gum. This will allow the implant root to bond with the bone and attach to the gum. Once this step is complete, the gum tissue can be sutured to heal. This healing process is known as osseointegration and may take several months to complete.

Step 3 – Placement of the abutment:

When the gum tissue is healed, your dentist or specialist will then be able to attach an abutment, which is the piece where the artificial tooth will be attached. This is done by way of minor surgery and usually only requires numbing with local anesthesia. During this procedure, the dentist or specialist will reopen your gum to expose the root implant and will attach the abutment to the implant. Your gum tissue will then close around the abutment without covering it. Depending on the circumstances, this part of the process can sometimes happen immediately after the implant root is placed in the gum as one single surgery.

Step 4 – Placement of the artificial tooth:

Once the artificial tooth or teeth are made, they can be attached to the abutment. This part of the process may require a few visits to the dentist to adjust the fit of the artificial tooth or teeth. If you are replacing all or several of your teeth with dental implant surgery, you may need to get a fixed bridge anchored to the implants, which can be done at this stage.

Are There Any Risks?

Dental implant surgery can pose certain health risks like any other type of surgery, but these risks are uncommon, generally minor, and are easily addressed. There is always a slight chance that infection occurs around the implant, which can be treated with antibiotics when appropriate.

How Do I Care For My Dental Implant?

You must maintain excellent dental and mouth hygiene if you get dental implants. It is recommended that you clean your implants with a toothbrush and floss, just like you would with natural teeth. However, we strongly recommend that you regularly attend your dental clinic for check-ups to ensure that the implants are working correctly and that they are not loose and do not affect your bite.
