keep teeth clean with dental braces

When you get braces on your teeth, it can be much more challenging to keep things clean, and there will be more tools recommended for you to use daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Braces make it more challenging to clean your teeth because of the brackets, bands, archwires, elastics and any other hardware that gets added to help move your teeth. Listed below are several tools you can use to help keep your teeth, gums and the braces clear from plaque accumulation:

Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush is highly recommended when wearing dental braces because it can access more nooks and crannies and do a better job brushing than a manual toothbrush. It is tough to angle a manual toothbrush around the brackets correctly, and often the gum line is missed. An electric toothbrush helps to get into those tricky areas and can do more brush strokes in 2 minutes of brushing than you can do with a manual toothbrush.

Water Flosser

A water flosser is a floss aid that helps to flush out bacteria from between your teeth and around your brackets and bands. A water flosser uses a jet of water (or you can put mouthwash into it) that you angle around your braces and gums to help keep them clean.

Superfloss/ Floss Threaders

These are both aids to help you use manual floss. Because the archwire prevents you from accessing between your teeth with regular floss, you need something to help you get the floss between your teeth from the side. These aids have a hard end on them to help you push the floss through the front teeth rather than going in from the top.

Proxabrush

This is a small brush that is shaped like a Christmas tree that helps to remove plaque from between brackets. The brush is used to access underneath the archwire to clean the brackets' sides, where it is easy for food debris and plaque to be trapped.

Remember, while wearing dental braces, it is essential to have regular check-ups and cleanings with your dentist and dental hygienist to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.

Electric Toothbrush

It is recommended to use an electric toothbrush when you have braces as they generally do a better job with cleaning. An electric toothbrush can achieve more brush strokes in 2 minutes than you can do with your hand. Electric toothbrushes are either circular or oval-shaped, and either use an oscillating or sweeping motion. Electric toothbrushes help remove bacteria from difficult to access areas. These areas are around the braces, around the brackets, the gum line and the biting surfaces of the teeth.

Water Flosser

A water flosser is a helpful flossing aid that actually uses a jet of water to help flush out bacteria from around the braces and between the teeth. You can either use water or mouthwash in your water flosser.

Proxabrush

This is a type of brush that helps to clean between the brackets, which can be a tough area to access with your toothbrush and floss or a water flosser. A proxabrush is quite similar to the end of a pipe cleaner; it has small bristles that extend outward and helps by trapping plaque and pulling it out. Rinse your proxabrush with water between use.

Fluoride

Fluoride is an essential component in keeping your teeth healthy with and without braces. When you have brackets on your teeth and plaque building up around the brackets, sometimes you can end up with white “decalcified” areas around the brackets when you get your braces off. Fluoride helps to keep the enamel of your teeth strong and healthy so that plaque has less of a chance of damaging your teeth. Fluoride strengthens your enamel to prevent cavities.

Regular Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings and checkups are necessary when braces are on to access the nooks and crannies that are difficult for you to access at home. All the plaque, tartar and staining will be cleaned off your teeth, your teeth and gums will be thoroughly checked over, and brushing and flossing will be reviewed.

Dental braces are comprised of bands, brackets and wires placed on the teeth to straighten and align them. On average they will stay on a patients teeth for around two years. While the braces are on, it is more challenging to keep the teeth and gums clean as there are many more nooks and crannies where plaque and bacteria can be trapped. Often, other dental aids are necessary to maintain a clean and healthy mouth. Listed below are essential dental tools to use while dental braces are on.

Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush is one of the most essential tools to be used with dental braces. Electric toothbrushes simulate brush strokes at a much faster rate than you can achieve with your hand. That means you have to hold the toothbrush for a few seconds on each tooth, making sure to access all surfaces of the tooth, and the brush will do the work for you. Electric toothbrushes either use an oscillating or sweeping motion.

Floss Aids

Because the wire of the braces blocks the contacts of teeth, it is necessary to use a floss aid to access the gum line. There are several different options for floss aids. Floss threaders are small loops that will pull the floss through, and super floss is a pre-cut piece of floss with a ridged end to poke through the contact underneath the wire. It is important to try several options and find the one that works best for you.

Water Flosser

A water flosser is an electric powered tool that is used to shoot water in a jet-like stream through the contacts of the teeth and around the brackets. The water flushes out bacteria that are difficult to access. Water flossers also help to keep the gums healthy.

Interdental Aids

Interdental aids are tools that help to clean between the teeth and around the brackets. An example of this is a small angular brush that helps remove plaque with the bristles.

More Frequent Cleanings

Regular professional dental cleanings are an essential part of maintaining a healthy mouth with dental braces. Some areas are tough to access, and even while using the right tools at home, may harbour bacteria. Cleanings every 3-4 months help to reduce the amount of bacteria accumulation and also provide a check up on the health of the gums and teeth.

It is essential to talk with your orthodontist, dentist or dental hygienist about the right tools for you. If you have any questions about any dental aids, or believe you may benefit from more frequent cleanings, we encourage you to contact us today to schedule an appointment.
