What is Invisalign Treatment?

what is invisalign treatment mississauga dentist

Invisalign is a technology that aligns teeth for a straight smile. Similar to how dental braces works, Invisalign aligns your bite and straightens your teeth. It uses a series of virtually clear plastic aligner trays that are worn for 1 to 2 weeks each before the next set of aligner trays in the series are worn. The clear plastic aligner trays work by applying slow and gradual pressure to the teeth. Plastic "attachments" are bonded to certain tooth surfaces, which allow the aligner trays to gain traction when repositioning the teeth. Treatment takes around 18 months on average, however, each case is different. A more complex the case may need more time.

How Invisalign Works

The first step is a consultation with your dentist or orthodontist, to discuss the expectations and end result of treatment. Next, dental impressions are taken of your teeth and sent to a dental laboratory to create a detailed treatment plan and series of aligner trays. At your second visit, plastic attachments are bonded to your teeth based on the treatment plan instructions. Once treatment is in progress, you will see your dentist or orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks to check your progress and receive your next set of aligner trays.

Keeping Your Teeth Healthy With Invisalign

Because you are able to take the trays out and put them back in, it is easier to keep teeth clean with Invisalign trays compared to dental braces. It is very important to wear the Invisalign trays as much as you can. You should only remove the aligner trays to eat and to brush your teeth. The better your compliance when wearing your trays, the faster the results. Just like always, it is vital to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Ensure you rinse your mouth after having food and before putting your trays back in to reduce your risk of cavities. Care for your aligner trays by gently brushing them with lukewarm water. Hot water can change the shape of the aligner trays, so it should be avoided.
