Tooth decay can wreak more havoc than just producing cavities. It can work its way into the innermost parts of the tooth — the pulp and tiny passageways called root canals that lead to the tooth's connection with the bone.
If that happens, you'll need more than “drilling and filling.” Without intervention, your tooth could be lost. That intervention is a root canal treatment, a procedure that removes the infection from within the tooth and preserves it from re-infection.
You've probably heard the old belief that root canal treatments are painful. With modern anesthetic techniques to deaden pain, that's not true. In fact, root canal treatments stop the pain caused by infected nerves within the pulp and root canals. More importantly, it saves your tooth.
Root canals can be performed by a general dentist. More extensive decay or complex root canal networks may require the services of an endodontist, a dentist who specializes in root canal anatomy and treatments. Endodontists have advanced techniques and equipment to handle even the most difficult case.
Regardless of who performs it, the basic procedure is the same, as is the goal: to completely remove all diseased tissue within the tooth and seal it with a special filling to prevent re-infection. To access the diseased pulp, we first drill an access hole, usually in the biting surface of a back tooth or the back of a front tooth. We then use specialized instruments to remove the infected tissue and flush out the space with antibacterial solutions.
We then insert a filling called gutta percha into the empty pulp chamber and root canals, seal off the filling with adhesive cement, and close the access hole with filling. These fillings and sealants prevent bacteria from reentering the tooth. For added protection against infection and fracturing, we also recommend placing a full-coverage dental crown. This also enhances the appearance of the tooth, which must be modified during the root canal procedure.
The end result: your once endangered tooth has been preserved for hopefully many years to come. So if we recommend you undergo a root canal treatment, don't wait — the tooth you save may be your own.
We all love (well, most of us!) that morning cup of coffee. Some of us have it black, and some of us have it with milk or cream and sugar. Well, it turns out, the effect of coffee on our teeth is primarily related to the way we drink our coffee. So, how can coffee affect our teeth?
Staining Our Teeth?
Yes! Staining occurs from the pigment in the foods and drinks we consume. Coffee, on its own, has a very dark pigment and therefore contributes mainly to staining on tooth surfaces. If you add milk or cream to your coffee, the pigment is not as dark, but it can still contribute to staining. Getting stained teeth from coffee has to do with your genetics, saliva and the type of bacteria in your mouth.
Yes! Because coffee has an acidic PH level, it can contribute to tooth erosion. It is possible that over time, tooth erosion can occur. Also, coffee has a diuretic effect, meaning it contributes to fluid loss, which can cause a dry mouth. Have a glass of water right after your coffee, to rinse out the coffee from your mouth as well as replenish fluid.
Halitosis? (Bad breath)
Yes! Coffee consumption can lead to bad breath because it gets trapped in the rough surface of the tongue and because it dries out your mouth.
Cavities or Tooth Decay?
It depends. Coffee on its own is not a precursor for cavities, but when milk/cream/sugar is added to coffee, the sugars can lead to cavities. Frequency and exposure time are more of a risk factor than quantity, so the slower you drink your coffee, the more of a risk for cavities.
As always, make sure you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once. See your dental hygienist regularly for cleanings and your dentist for check-up exams. In addition, drink a glass of water after you have your coffee, to rinse the coffee/sugar from your mouth. Also, consider reducing the amount of sugar you put in your coffee. Even milk and cream have natural sugars that can lead to cavities.
The electronic cigarette (e-cig), the much-acclaimed smoking alternative, has recently been linked to hundreds of lung-related illnesses and deaths among otherwise healthy young adults. But dentists were actually among the first to sound alarm bells on the potential harm of “vaping,” particularly to dental health.
If you're vaping as a substitute for smoking, you may be trading one set of oral health risks for another. Many dentists believe vaping may be no safer for your mouth than traditional tobacco.
An e-cig is a small, handheld device that holds a mixture of water, flavoring and chemicals. The device heats the liquid until it becomes a gaseous aerosol the user inhales into their lungs. Proponents say it's a safer and cleaner alternative to smoking. But, like cigarettes, vaping mixtures can contain nicotine. This chemical constricts blood vessels, decreasing nutrients and infection-fighting agents to the gums and increasing the risk of gum disease.
And although vaping flavorings are FDA-approved as a food additive, there's some evidence as an aerosol they irritate the mouth's inner membranes and cause mouth dryness similar to smoking. Vaping liquids also contain propylene glycol for moisture preservation, which some studies have shown increases a buildup of plaque, the bacterial film most responsible for dental disease.
All of these different effects from vaping can create a perfect storm in the mouth for disease. So, rather than switch to vaping, consider quitting the tobacco habit altogether. It's a solid thing to do for your teeth and gums, not to mention the rest of the body.
As we commemorate the Great American Smokeout on November 21, this month is the perfect time to take action. Here are some tips to help you kick the habit.
Don't try to quit all at once. Your body has developed a physical connection with nicotine, so quitting “cold turkey” can be extremely difficult and unpleasant. Although different approaches work for different people, you may find it easier to overcome your habit by gradually reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke each day.
Enroll in a cessation program. There are a number of step-by-step programs, some involving medication, that can help you quit smoking. Talk to us or your doctor about using a cessation program to end your tobacco habit.
Seek support from others. Beating the smoking habit can be tough if you're trying to do it solo. Instead, enlist the help of family and friends to support you and keep you on track. Consider also joining a supervised support group for quitting smoking near you or online.
Smoking can harm your dental health and vaping may be just as harmful. Distancing yourself from both habits will help you maintain a healthier smile and a healthier life.
